The Restoration of Mike Tyson’s Abandoned Mansion

Lis'Anne Harris:

Very cool, more recent pics of the abandoned Mike Tyson property. The place is about to be restored into a church! I’m looking forward to seeing the “after” pictures.

My journeys have taken me to some strange places, ranging from the creepiness of an abandoned lunatic asylum, to the quiet, vast emptiness of a forgotten chapel, but nothing quite like the abandoned home of a former professional boxer. After being arrested here in 2013 it was nice to make a return trip, thankfully not ending in a $280 fine, to finally photograph the very odd forgotten structure of Mike Tyson’s abandoned 1980s mansion.

Now retired, the once undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Mike Tyson, otherwise known as Iron Mike, still holds a record for being the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles at only 20 years old. Mike Tyson became a very opulent man, even if for just a moment before spending his money on multiple mansions, drugs and living a wild party-filled lifestyle, which eventually led to him filing bankruptcy in August…

Sadly, Utterly Abandoned Ani, Turkey

Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city now situated in the Turkish province of Kars and next to the closed border with Armenia.

It was first mentioned in the 5th century and abandoned in the 17th, Between 961 and 1045, it was the capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom that covered much of present-day Armenia and eastern Turkey. Called the “City of 1001 Churches,” Ani stood on various trade routes and its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world. At its height, the population of Ani probably was around 100,000.

Long ago, renowned for its splendor and magnificence, Ani was sacked by the Mongols in 1236 and devastated in a 1319 earthquake, after which it was reduced to a village and gradually abandoned and largely forgotten by the 17th century. Ani is a widely recognized cultural, religious, and national heritage symbol for Armenians. According to Razmik Panossian, Ani is one of the most visible and ‘tangible’ symbols of past Armenian greatness and hence a source of pride.

Songs and poems have been written about Ani and its past glory. “Tesnem Anin u nor mernem” (Տեսնեմ Անին ու նոր մեռնեմ, Let me see Ani and die) is a famous poem by Hovhannes Shiraz. It was turned into a song by Turkish-Armenian composer Cenk Taşkan. Ara Gevorgyan’s 1999 album of folk instrumental songs is titled Ani.

The Ani security fence was constructed in 2002 around the uninhabited medieval city of Ani which is situated in the Turkish province of Kars along the border with Armenia. After the construction of the fence, the local villagers were forbidden to graze their livestock within Ani, which has led to the ground becoming rapidly overgrown with vegetation. Opponents to the fence claimed that the construction process gave scant concern to the importance of the site and caused considerable damage to archaeological remains.

Abandoned Henry River Mill Village – Photos by Jeff Decker

Waving to all my abandoned junkies! I have a cool place to share with you today. 😊 Sorry for my overlong absence; I had to ground myself from indulging my passion for all things abandoned until my current manuscript was written and revised, the synopsis written, the blurb written, and everything was sent off to my wonderful personal editor to weed out the imperfections. Now I can’t wait to get started on my hunt for an agent and editor who are as passionate about the derelict and decrepit as we are!Henry River Mill Village by Jeff Decker | Lis'Anne Harris

These pictures were sent to me by my good friend, Jeff Decker. He shot them in North Carolina while on vacation with his son. The abandoned Henry River Mill Village is where the opening scene of the first The Hunger Games was shot. District 12 was the home of Katniss and Peta.

The village was started as a planned community in 1904, by a couple of guys who used the power of the river for a textile mill.  Of the 35 original houses built for the workers, 21 are still standing, though quite derelict. The mill was closed in the 1960s, and burned in 1977. Henry River Mill Village by Jeff Decker | Lis'Anne Harris

From Wikipedia: Henry River Mill Village is a small textile village in Burke County, North Carolina. It is an unaltered but now-decaying example of an early industrial environment.

The village was a self-contained complex with its own mill, dam, water and fire-protection systems, and company store. In later years, the village gained amenities such as walkways, terraced green spaces, and field stone retaining walls. Today most of the village’s original buildings remain sited along a small gorge of the Henry River, just west of Catawba County, North Carolina. The site is private property but can be driven through via Henry River Road. It is located a short distance from Interstate 40 via an exit near Hildebran. Click the Wikipedia link for more on how/why the village began.Henry River Mill Village by Jeff Decker | Lis'Anne Harris

There are posted No Trespassing signs! Look from a distance, but don’t go in. If you have a telephoto zoom lens, there’s no law against taking pictures from the road. 🙂 For more gorgeous images of this village, hop over to Denise Warden Photography. She’s captured the exquisite poignancy of this place. Henry River Mill Village by Jeff Decker | Lis'Anne Harris

Now that book one is under my belt, I’ll do better at making time to share the images I find. Happy wallowing in everything abandoned and Happy Halloween! 👻

Back Country Decay & The Release of The Viscount’s Feisty Highland Lass!

The Viscount's Feisty Highland Lass | Lis'Anne HarrisTo celebrate the release of the long-awaited revised edition of my first published historical romance novel, The Viscount’s Feisty Highland Lass, I’ve pulled together this fabulous series of abandoned, derelict barns and sheds. If you feel so inclined, click over to read the blurb or to Amazon and check out the story of Viscount Alexander Everdon and his daring damsel, Lady Desiree Frazier. 🙂

Have you ever seen that show on the DIY channel called Barnwood Builders? I love it! I’m totally fascinated with how those humongous barns were built in the good old days with brute strength, basic tools, and brilliant planning. It’s simply amazing how many are proving the ingenuity of our ancestors by the test of time. I had no idea there are guys out there like those from Barnwood Living doing what they can to salvage the huge posts, beams, and planks of these beauties slowly decaying in the back country.  How cool would it be to have one of these derelict relics from a bygone era rebuilt on your land? Turn it into a super cool party barn, pool house,  or rustic home. The possibilities are only limited by your imagine and bank account. 🙂

It’s almost ready! Available first on Amazon July 12, 2018, followed by Kobo, Smashwords, Google Books, & Google Play!

Isabella Warren feels as empty and forlorn as the buildings she restores. The last living member of the Warren family, she desperately seeks the historic mansion in a sketch she found in her granddad’s attic. After two years, she finally finds the derelict home of her ancestors in the Berkshires of Massachusetts and wins it at auction. With the vast resources of her renovation business, she sets out to save the haunted, decrepit Chatham Hall. Isabella hopes to find a measure of peace by owning a part of her family history.

Jack Haverhill, the owner of a small historic rehabilitation company, has been waiting his whole life to buy Chatham Hall. He’s determined to save the house he believes saved him. To survive a childhood of abuse from his father, he made the derelict building his refuge. Dark anger haunts him day and night as he tries to find a new way forward after losing the house to the bossy Isabella Warren.

Instant dislike and distrust between Jack and Isabella slowly gives way to feelings of a bone-deep connection. The two work together with the aid of a paranormal investigator to uncover the heinous crimes committed by the evil spirit haunting Chatham Hall. Will the horrifying truth of the past be too ugly for Jack and Isabella to overcome?

Sad Old Firetruck

This poor old firetruck sat in a field along the road to Newberry from Gainesville. I had planned to stop and take pictures for years and finally got around to it. The next time we drove along that stretch of road it was gone! A nursery near Jonesville adopted it and now it sits proudly at the front of their business in all its rusty red glory. While perusing images for inspiration, these popped out from among the hundreds I viewed. Unfortunately, I don’t know where any of these are located. They’re all free to use from Pixabay and Pxhere. I hope they spark an emotion within you as they did me. 🙂

Abandoned 1965 Sage Dream Hauler…A New Beginning

Some people might think I’m insane…or stupid. Maybe they’d be right. All I know is I’m a dreamer with big dreams. The old saying, you won’t know until you try had been stuck on replay in my mind over the last six months as I kept going back to the pictures of this decrepit, old camper.

My best guess is it’s a 1965. The only reference I could find to a Sage from Lupton, Michigan, was the pictures and description from a site that sells RVs. The body type is “trunk back.”

Vintage Travel Trailer Birchwood Beauty / Aqua Camper With Lots Of Room /Storage

“This Birchwood 16′ 1965 Sage is located in West Branch, Michigan 48661 Zip Code. Trailer has clean Michigan Title weighing 2360 lbs and includes its original keys to the working Bargman door lock and trunk lock!!!!! This trailer pulls like a dream!!! I always thought Shastas were a dream to pull until I hauled this one behind a six cylinder van. No wind drag, sway or bounce. I believe its great towability is due to its design both in the front and rear. This trailer was manufactured in Lupton… “

That’s all I have to work with until someone with more information comes along and finds this post. 🙂 In the mean time, it’ll be slow going since I’m not physically capable of doing major grunt work like I used to, but thankfully I’m married to an amazing carpentry master craftsman. 😀 I’ll show you the finished pics some day in the hopefully not too distant future.

This is what it looks liked when I saw it on the facebook marketplace. I bought it without seeing it in person. The previous owner delivered it to me well after dark one evening.

This is what it looked like in the bright light of day. *heavy sigh*

Even though it’s in far worse shape than we expected, it’s not hopeless. This abandoned Sage will live again. 🙂
